The action was some fights in the band and I performed the boxing second. I had fashioned 34 entrances and exits, very few lines and a sponge. Throughout a career in theatre, tv set and film spanning over 75 years, acting professional Peter Vaughan has kept in mind a bit of advice directed at him by his father: always see the ludicrous side of things. This may come as a shock to the people who associate him mainly with menacing, even brutal personas, in from Sam Peckinpah's Straw Pet dogs to Terry Gilliam's Brazil. Many will have fond memory of his portrayal of 'genial' Harry Grout in the common sitcom Porridge, which is ironic because the character only appeared in three shows. Such was the indelible make Peter's performance left on the visitors' thoughts. Still working in his 90s, he has recently gained a complete new generation of fans with his role as Aemon Targaryen in the hugely popular fantasy play series Game of Thrones. This autobiography will take us back again to illustrate his upbringing in 1920s Shropshire, the stormy romantic relationship between his parents, his wartime exploits and early on career in rep prior to going on to find fame on stage and display screen alongside such well known statistics as Celia Johnson, Tallulah Bankhead, Tony Curtis, Frank Sinatra, Tony Hancock and so many more. Through it all, that knowing of the ludicrous has perhaps helped to keep Peter sane and certainly added to the enormous enjoyment of the work which shines through in this genuine and revealing consideration of his life. The audiobook is read for audio by Terry Molloy (The Archers, Doctor Who).
