Welcome to the audiobook version of The Free Brontosaurus, David Berkeley's novella comprising 10 interweaving stories, complete with his accompanying album of 10 music, one for every single character. This is an incredible merging of genres, exploring the relationship between books and music, between prose and lyric. Here, you have the stories and the music sequenced jointly. The stories in The Free Brontosaurus are all occur the same imaginary city, at the same instant, minor characters in a single story are major people in another. It is a bit like Olive Kitteridge, if reimagined by Miranda July. They are smoothly written narratives of isolation, describing characters disconnected from home and community. The publication is filled with dark laughter, sadness, and glimmers of delight. Ultimately, the people' abilities to find beauty in the bizarre hook up and redeem them, offering the people (and us) pray. The book is merely half of this project, though, for this also includes a soundtrack: Cardboard Motorboat, comprising one songs per story, written from the point of view of the key identity from each story. The album features Nickel Creek's Sara Watkins on history vocals. Both publication and the album can stand alone. However, when both are combined, because they are here, an unusually moving and multi-layered world is born, more likely to break and mend the heart. Berkeley has gathered some of his favorite musicians and friends to learn these stories: songwriters Vienna Teng, Dan Bern, Garrison Starr, Natalia Zukerman, Kim Taylor, and Jono Manson; David's bandmates Bill Titus and Jordan Katz; David's partner Sarah Davis; and David himself.
