What is record? In his 2001 e book In Defence of Record, Uk historian Richard J. Evans debates the nature of the subject. Certain thinkers known as postmodernists consider record to be not very far taken off a work of fiction, something based on a scholar's own interpretation of days gone by. Evans, however, argues that historians don't have free reign. Somewhat, they are constrained and empowered by the type of the surviving evidence. Evans shows how an understanding of social issues and rigorous scientific research give record shape, and why it is not simply in regards to a historian's own opinions and interpretations. He is cautious with the postmodernist view that record is simply that which we make of it. Evans says this is contradictory and can potentially lead to dangerous political ideologies if we allow all historical interpretations as equally valid. Evans defends a mainstream position, but this provocative and engaging work has become a key part of the general debate about what record is. Twelve editions of In Defence of Record have been publicized to date, showing that Evans's heartfelt championing of the discipline has evidently struck a chord.
